The trek to Harishchandragad is a thrilling adventure in the Sahyadris, featuring dense forests, rocky trails, and steep ascents leading to the fort's vast plateau " Kokankada " . As evening approaches, campers gather at the edge of the majestic Konkankada cliff, offering breathtaking views of the expansive Konkan plains under. A serene night sky above Taramati peak, with the moon casting a gentle glow through silhouetted tree branches during an ascent. Nightfall brings cool winds, starry skies, and the soft echoes of nature, wherea bonfire adds a musical touch to the camping atmosphere. Early risers trek to Taramati Peak to witness a breathtaking sunrise. As the highest point of Harishchandragad, Taramati Peak offers a stunning view as dawn transforms the sky from deep blue to orange and gold, illuminating the Sahyadri ranges. Mist drifts over valleys, and Konkan Kada's cliffs glow in the morning light. The cool breeze and serene silence create a peaceful and unforgettable experience, rewarding every trekker who reaches the summit. Indravajra at Kokankada The Indravajra phenomenon at Harishchandragad, particularly near Konkan Kada, is a captivating natural event that enchants trekkers. Occurring under specific weather conditions, typically in the early morning after the monsoon or during winter, thick clouds form below the cliff as the sun rises behind the observer. This results in a bright circular rainbow halo encircling the shadow of a person standing at the cliff's edge. The shadow appears enlarged on the clouds, surrounded by vibrant rings. Scientifically known as a Brocken Spectre, this optical marvel is locally referred to as Indravajra by trekkers. The Harishchandreshwar Temple , nestled on this adamant fort, is an ancient Shiva temple dating back to the 6th–11th century, during the Kalachuri and later Yadava dynasties. Constructed in the Hemadpanti architectural style, this stone-carved temple showcases intricate sculptures of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and other deities, highlighting early Shaivism influences. Once a vital spiritual hub for sages and pilgrims, its serene location in the Sahyadri mountains contributes to its enduring sacredness. Despite enduring harsh weather over centuries, the temple remains a testament to medieval Indian craftsmanship and continues to be a revered site for trekkers and devotees. Gateway to Serenity Harihareshwar is where forested hills meet a calm stretch of the Arabian Sea. Best known for the ancient Harihareshwar Temple— dedicated to Lord Shiva—the town blends spiritual calm with laid-back beach vibes. A short coastal trail leads to the Kalbhairav cliff, offering sweeping sea views and a dose of adventure. The Moon crescent-shaped Harihareshwar Beach is pristine sand, perfect for long walks, sunsets, and listening to the surf. Life here moves relax : fishing boats bob above the sea , homestays serve simple Konkani meals, and evenings end early under starry skies. Visit between October and March for pleasant weather; monsoon turns the surroundings lush but limits swimming. Ideal for weekenders from Mumbai or Pune, Harihareshwar is less about ticking sights and more about switching off—nature, devotion, and the sea doing their quiet work. Scenic setting - The temple stands just above Harihareshwar Beach, where the Savitri River meets the Arabian Sea, creating dramatic views and sunsets ideal for photocaptors. - A rocky coastal "प्रदक्षिणा " path circles the hill and temple along the sea; it is usually attempted only at low tide due to slippery rocks and waves. Do visit with your gang and enjoy nature with spirutality.
- When Devotion Meets Destruction: The Tapovan Tragedy Unveiled
In the heart of Nashik, Maharashtra, Tapovan stands as a timeless testament to nature's sanctity—a lush forest where Lord Rama once meditated during his exile, sheltering 3,500 trees and vibrant wildlife. Yet today, this green lung faces the axe: plans to fell 1,700–1,825 trees across 54 acres for a Sadhugram to house sadhus during the 2026–2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. What begins as "temporary" infrastructure for a holy event risks permanent loss, all in the name of self-serving spectacle. Nashik's residents, from environmentalists to politicians , have risen in defiance—hugging trees, staging yoga protests, and rallying over 40,000 signatures on Change.org . They decry the irony: chopping sacred groves for a spiritual gathering, ignoring eco-alternatives while Nashik Municipal Corporation claims only "invasive shrubs" will go . This isn't progress; it's prioritizing fleeting crowds over eternal heritage, turning spirituality into a commodity. True devotion honors nature as divine, not disposable. Save Tapovan—before Nashik's lungs are traded into toilets and tents. Our collective voice will make a difference.

- Where Mythology Meets Mastery: The Gharapuri Experience (Elephanta Caves)
PC: Asmita Nestled on a small island amidst Mumbai Harbour, the ancient cave complex of Gharapuri — more popularly known as the Elephanta Caves — offers a fascinating blend of nature, mythology and master‑class rock‑cut architecture. It's a short trip with an eye for art and history and without fail this place delivers. - Knowing the Backstory The site dates from about the mid‑5th to 6th centuries AD, though the island itself had earlier occupation (even Buddhist stupas from 2nd century BC). The caves reflect the artistic exuberance of the time — not just architecture, but narrative art, sculptural depth and mythic iconography all in one. Later period, saw damage (including during the Portuguese era) and conservation efforts established in modern times. -Getting There & First Impressions The island lies off the coast of Mumbai (about 10 km from the Gateway of India). You’ll take a ferry from the city, land at the small jetty and climb up a flight of steps or walk a gentle path through greenery to reach the caves. The hilltop vantage also gives you sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and the Mumbai skyline. ( HinduPost ) As you approach, you’ll notice the was‑once‑giant stone elephant that gave the island its “Elephanta” name (originally the local name is “Gharapuri” meaning “town of caves”). - Architectural & Artistic Marvels Carving into the rock: Between the 5th and 8th centuries CE, artisans carved the caves out of solid basalt rock. ( Culture and Heritage ). The main group comprises seven caves — five primarily Hindu (dedicated to the lord Shiva) and two Buddhist‑style ones. The Great Cave : This is the heart of the site. Architecturally, the cave is laid out as a squared sanctum surrounded by pillared halls (mandapa) and subsidiary chambers. In plan, the main hall is approximately 27 × 27 metres, with the full depth measuring about 39 metres from entrance to back wall. ( UNESCO World Heritage Centre ). Look out for the massive rows of carved columns supporting the roof — a technical feat considering the solid rock from which everything was carved. Sculptural Highlights: - Trimurti (Sadashiva): This 7‐metre high relief depicts Shiva in three aspects — the creator, preserver and destroyer. -Ardhanarishvara: A figure combining Shiva & Parvati, male‑female in one. -Gangadhara : Depicting the descent of the Ganges over Shiva’s hair, a narrative carved in rock. -Other panels show scenes of dance (Nataraja), yoga (Yogishvara) and mythic tales of Shiva. Symbolism & Orientation: The layout is more than functional — it’s spiritual. The entrance, pillared halls and sanctum are aligned and oriented in line with ritual‐aspects (such as a sarvatobhadra garbhagriha plan) so the space itself becomes a sculptural metaphor for cosmic order. - What to See & Do Spend time in Cave 1: let your eyes trace the Trimurti relief and notice how the figures are carved in deep relief, almost reaching out of the wall. Walk through the hall and examine the massive rock‑cut pillars. Imagine the effort involved in carving them, one by one, out of basalt. Pause at viewpoints on the island: the climb up brings reward in the form of panoramic sea views and fresh air. Visit the lesser‐explored caves if time permits — they’re quieter and offer a contrast. Pick up a local guide or audio guide: many sculptures and myths come alive with explanation (for example, why the Trimurti has three heads, or what each panel’s story is about). - Final Thoughts Gharapuri’s Elephanta Caves are more than just ancient caves. They are a masterpiece of rock‑cut architecture , mythic storytelling in stone, and an immersive experience where nature and art merges. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply a wanderer seeking something special near Mumbai, those ancient caves will leave an imprints on your voyage. - Finally!! In forage of Opposition,a democracy retained.
"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. An effective opposition is necessary in democracy to provide checks and balances in the government. An opposition can pressure rulling government to review their decisions and prevent any law being passed with autocracy, hence making it ineffective. Without an effective opposition the government of the day, becomes dictatorial and unaccountable and could pass laws which favor a selected few or a particular tribe or group. As said “Power Corrupts”, unfortunately it does, the so called kings in the past that were said to be “benevolent”, were actually not exposed to real power. Although the leader may think he is acting in the interest of the people but if they do not have a say in it, they will feel subjugated. With a decade of no strong opposition, roots of democracy and voice of citizens blown away with a echoes of religious stumble and glamour of sycophants. It is very commendable from voters of India to brought a change and give us strong opposition who may make the nation ready to not allow those dictators to make decisions unanimous. Hopefully, it seems great route ahead with strong opposition who could be able to mould the rulling decisions in favour of Indians at all levels. With my best wishes to those with horse trade may form Rule for democracy and with them who notch the rule by their strong opposition.
- "कास" khaas hai!! (कास पठार)
Often called Maharashtra’s ‘valley of flowers’ (even though it is a rocky plateau), Kas plateau is in the western part of Maharashtra. Located approximately 25 kms from Satara city, this laterite plateau will definitely allure you with its charm. Towards the end of the monsoon (usually late September till early October), the barren plateau dons a mantle of green dotted with variegated flowers. Beds of yellow, pink, white, blue, even mixed-hued blooms stretch as far as the eye can see. But what was known to a handful of researchers and nature lovers for decades turned into a popular attraction since 2012, when the Western Ghat hills were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a biodiversity hotspot. Places to explore nearby : 1.Vajrai waterfall 2.Kaas lake 3.Sajjangad fort 4.Thoseghar Waterfall 5. Ajinkyatara. A word of Appeal: As exposures sometimes ruin the beauty of nature. It happened with Kas pathar since declaration as Heritage platue. It has been observed that visitor's irreverence towards nature made many damages to extinct species of kas valley. It is kind appeal to those who are visiting the place for party/ hangouts and spend time for reels and bottleblasts, not to destroy nature. Instead nurture it by following discipline and instructions at place and feel real nature in proximity by reverence to those tiny flora and fauna of valley and make them blossom in abundance. - Maharashtra's Hidden Gem: Nana Fadanis Wada
In the thirst of curiosity one day it took us to Menavali, a village 4 kms from Wai in Satara (Maharashtra). A historic significance of Wai is well known for its enchanting architectural styles of temples and palaces in the empire of Marathas. Once reached at Menavali, the marvelous hidden gem exposed in front of us and its "Nana fadnis Wada (Hisroric Palace)". The palace reveals its beautiful history era back to 17th century. In the path of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Hindavi Swarajya to Maratha Samrajya , Nana Fadnis(Fadnavis) is an important page in the history of Peshwas for nearly sixty years even after the battle of Panipat. This immensely intelligent and diplomatic personality has gained a respectable place in the list of those who ruled the state on condition. He had sensed the British threat to the Maratha power and started negotiations with the French to counter the British motives of expansion. During his lifetime, he was successful in keeping the British away from the Maratha Empire. The palace hails scenic and powerful history of Maratha architectural history. The 250+ year old wada structure comprises of the main stone plinth above which rises the two storeyed wooden framed structures with walls made of bricks and dried mud, hay and lime mortar. The wada has some excellent specimens of art in the form of well-carved wooden ceilings, and cypress pillars with cusped arches and maratha style wall paintings, that are adorned with faunal and floral motifs. In the outskirts of the palace, there is a huge tree with a broad trunk; this tree is called as "Kalpavruksha". This tree is native to Africa. It is around 250 years old and has longevity of 1100 years. It has Hindu Mythological significance as "well-wishing tree" A smart audio guide... “मी वाडा बोलतोय" in which the wada itself will narrate detailed information about the architecture, significance of each room in the wada, cultural events that took place here, some important incidents about Nana Phadnavis/Peshwai and much more. One can get a feeling of connection with history and culture while listening to the details of architecture of wada. Moreover, visitors can feel connected with the “vaastu” by walking bare feet on the cool cow-dung floors and reliving the cultural events that took place in the wada. We can take home personalized souvenirs badges with their own name written on it in “मोडी ” script. मोडी was a script used to write Marathi for an estimated 700 years. All administrative paperwork of the Peshwas was carried out in the मोडी script. Another significant attraction here is the victorious and mammoth bell in front of the Meneshwar Shiv temple. The bell is symbol of Maratha's victory over the Portuguese in the battle of Vasai fort. It has an idol of mother Mary with baby Jesus (year engraved 1707 on Bell)and inscription in Latin with engravings "Praise the Lord with the sound made by this bell ". At the back of palace, a peaceful beauty of Krishna Ghat can be experienced in the evening that will definitely soothe your mind and take you to the serenity. In the rush of survivng, it seems, we are secluding the places of our cultural glory where many intellectuals have been contributed towards building and strengthning our unique culture of India. We must hail and preserve them with wholesome hands and pride. Pics courtesy and editing : by Asmita Ghatge.
